About the Jubilee History of Kew

Barnard's Jubilee History of Kew was published in 1910 to mark the first fifty years of the Borough (later City) of Kew, a suburb of Melbourne in Victoria Australia.

This book is now difficult to obtain and, due to the absence of any comprehensive indexing, difficult to use for reference purposes. This online version of the Jubilee History marks the sesquicentenary of Kew and makes available to everyone the contents of the book whether for formal study or simply to browse early photographs of the region.

Using the Google search box in the left side bar allows the full text of the book to be searched.

The layout of the online version of the Jubilee History is as close to the printed version as browsers allow. Original page numbers are shown as «x». This indicates the end of a page and that what follows is on page x. In the original, photographs were interleaved on separate unnumbered pages. In the online version each photograph has been placed near where it originally appeared. Clicking on a photograph produces a full-sized version in a new window. All photographs are also shown in a gallery page. Advertisements, which mainly appeared at the beginning and end of the book also have a gallery page.

The original spelling has been maintained. There are possible errors in the original book. It appears that formal written corrections were made to the original. These appear in this version. It also seems that pages of illustrations may not have been included in the correct order as this differs from the order in the list of contents and illustrations.

The online version was created using optical character recognition followed by manual correction. Whilst every care has been taken to ensure that the original text has been reproduced accurately, errors may remain. If you identify any errors, or if you have any queries, please contact me at

Full details of the original publication are given on the home page. It should generally be cited as “Barnard, F. G. A. (Francis George Allman) The Jubilee History of Kew, Victoria : Its Origin and Progress Kew [Vic.] : E.F.G. Hodges, "Mercury Office", 1910.” If you wish to cite material retrieved from this web site, add “Retrieved from http://www.biostats.com.au/Kew on dd/mmm/yyyy” where dd/mmm/yyyy is the last date on which you accessed the material.

An earlier account of Boroodara by James Bonwick – “A Sketch of Boroondara” is also available on this web site.
